I am going to make this very quick.
This happen on Sunday June 2, 2013
1. weather forecasted nice day, got to bait camp saw the nasty weather on TV. didn't think it would hit the area... mistake #1
2. 2 jetski's and 2 islands .... made it to 7 mile rig... started fishing, noticed black clounds in the horizon back towards land.
3. tried to make the run for it, got pushed back due to 30 MPH winds, told the jetski guys to go back in, made last minute decision to hook up to a rig we saw 1/2 mile south of us.
4. made it to the rig, with winds and waves in the crazy scale, held on for dear life... while Greg was holding on to the AI with a rope, I was making sure the rig hook would not fall off. We had to peddle to the rig after every wave, to keep the stress off the rig hook.
5. longest 2 hours of hour lives, while listening to the VHF weather station. winds and waves started to calm down after 2 hours of heavy rain, lighting, massive crashing waves, and 30mph winds. We were very close to calling Coast Guard.
6. Our friend on the jetski was worried about us so he called the Coast Guard on us. later on that day, tacking and trolling back we see the Coast Guard chopper.
When the winds died down at the rig I started fishing and caught a 17" red snapper, 21" red snapper. and while trolling back in we got a 38" King fish.
A lot of lesson learned that day. Just because we are in sailing kayak crafts it is still very dangerous going long distance because we can not do much in 30 mph winds. I do not suggest any one in Hobie Islandsto make a long distance trip with out proper safety of knowledge of weather.
I just want to thank God for our safe return with no injuries. ....... and yes it got it on video
